What is gear?
Gear can be defined as mechanical device which is used to transmit power from one shaft to other shaft at different r.p.m for short distance.( gear is a wheel with teeth )
Some will see it like that gears are only used to transit power for short distance so it should be its disadvantage. This people should consider example of watches.
Besides it gear can provide constant velocity ratio and it also transmit large power.
There are different types of gear drives which are used depends on axis of shaft and requirement of power at different r.p.m
Some disadvantages of gears are
1) expansive manufacturing process.
2) proper lubricants and proper method to apply it is needed to reduce noise and wear.

-> Axis of shafts between which power is being transmitted.
-> Depends on type of teeth used.
-> Depends on peripheral velocity.
